Circumferential Abdominoplasty

The most comprehensive body contouring procedure available — treating the entire lower trunk in a single operation. Also known as belt lipectomy or lower body lift.

What Is Circumferential Abdominoplasty?

Circumferential abdominoplasty — also called a belt lipectomy or 360° lower body lift — removes excess skin and tissue all the way around the entire lower trunk in a single, comprehensive surgical procedure.

Unlike a standard tummy tuck, which addresses only the front of the abdomen, the circumferential procedure simultaneously treats the abdomen, flanks, lower back, buttocks and outer thighs — delivering a dramatic and balanced transformation.

It is specifically designed for patients who have experienced massive weight loss — whether through bariatric surgery (gastric sleeve, gastric bypass) or sustained lifestyle changes — and are left with significant circumferential skin laxity around the lower body.

Dr Florica includes a mons pubis lift as part of the abdominal component of this procedure, and his technique also naturally elevates and reshapes the buttocks through the posterior component.

Benefits of Circumferential Abdominoplasty

🔄

Complete 360° Transformation

By addressing the entire lower trunk simultaneously, this procedure delivers a balanced, dramatic result — not just a flat stomach, but a comprehensively reshaped lower body.

✂️

Single Operation

Rather than multiple separate procedures staged over years, the circumferential approach achieves comprehensive results in one anaesthetic — reducing total recovery time and cost.

🍑

Natural Buttock Lift

The posterior component naturally lifts and reshapes the buttocks — addressing the deflation and sagging that commonly follows massive weight loss.

🫃

Mons Pubis Lift Included

Dr Florica includes a mons pubis lift as part of the abdominal component — a detail that significantly improves the overall aesthetic of the lower abdominal area.

👕

Improves Comfort & Hygiene

Excess circumferential skin causes chronic irritation, rashes, and hygiene difficulties. This procedure resolves all of these functional issues comprehensively.

🧘

Lasting Psychological Benefit

For patients who have worked hard to achieve major weight loss, removing excess skin is often described as the most psychologically significant step in their entire journey.

Who Is Suitable?

Circumferential abdominoplasty is best suited for patients who:

  • Have achieved significant weight loss (typically 40kg+ or more)
  • Have maintained stable weight for at least 3–6 months
  • Have excess skin on the abdomen AND flanks, back, or buttocks
  • Are non-smokers (or have ceased for at least 6 weeks)
  • Are in good general health and fit for major surgery
  • Have realistic expectations of outcomes and scarring

Smoking: Smoking significantly increases the risk of wound complications. Cessation at least 6 weeks before surgery — and permanently thereafter — is strongly advised and required for safe surgery.

How the Procedure Works

1

General Anaesthetic

You are fully asleep throughout the procedure, which typically takes 3–5 hours.

2

Anterior Component

The abdominal apron and excess skin are removed. Abdominal muscles are tightened (plication) where needed. The belly button is repositioned. Mons pubis lift performed.

3

Posterior Component

The patient is repositioned. Excess skin from the flanks, lower back, and buttocks is removed — naturally lifting the buttock contour.

4

Closure & Drains

Incisions are closed in layers. Surgical drains remain for several days to prevent fluid collection.

5

Hospital & Recovery

2–4 nights in hospital. Compression garment fitted and worn for 6–8 weeks. Full results visible at 6–12 months.

What to Expect After Surgery

  • Day 1–4
In hospital. Walking with assistance from Day 1. Drains in situ. Pain managed with medication.
  • Week 1–2
Home. Short walks. Drains removed around day 7–10. Compression garment worn 24/7.
  • Week 2–4
Increasing mobility. Many patients return to desk work at 3–4 weeks. Avoiding lifting and strenuous activity.
  • Week 6–8
Light exercise (walking, swimming). Compression garment may be worn less frequently.
  • 3 Months
Return to all activities including gym and heavy lifting. Swelling continuing to resolve.
  • 6–12 Months
Final result fully visible. Scars continue to mature and fade over 12–18 months post-surgery.

Circumferential Abdominoplasty FAQ

A standard tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) addresses only the front of the abdomen. A circumferential abdominoplasty (belt lipectomy / lower body lift) treats the entire lower trunk — abdomen, flanks, lower back, buttocks and outer thighs — in a single comprehensive procedure. It is indicated for patients with significant skin excess extending around the entire lower body, typically following massive weight loss. Dr Florica also includes a mons pubis lift as part of the anterior component.
Body contouring is generally recommended once your weight has been stable for 3–6 months — typically 12–18 months after bariatric surgery. Operating while weight is still fluctuating significantly increases the risk of a suboptimal result. Good nutritional status including adequate protein and vitamin levels is also essential for safe wound healing.
Most patients are discharged after 2–4 nights in hospital. Return to light activities and desk work is typically at 3–4 weeks. Full activity including exercise and heavy lifting is usually possible from 8–12 weeks. Final results continue to improve over 6–12 months as swelling resolves and scars mature.
The panniculectomy component (removal of the abdominal apron) may attract Medicare rebates when performed for functional clinical reasons following massive weight loss. The full circumferential procedure is generally considered cosmetic and not routinely funded by Medicare. Medicare eligibility is assessed individually — our team will advise at your consultation.
Yes. The circumferential abdominoplasty leaves a scar that runs all the way around the lower trunk, positioned at bikini-line level — typically concealable by underwear and swimwear. Scars fade significantly over 12–18 months. The vast majority of patients consider the scarring a very acceptable trade-off for the dramatic improvement in body contour and quality of life.
Yes — absolutely. Smoking significantly impairs wound healing by reducing blood flow to the skin, dramatically increasing the risk of wound breakdown and necrosis. Cessation of smoking (including vaping) at least 6 weeks before surgery is required. Ideally, cessation should be permanent.
