Understanding the cost of body contouring surgery in Australia — Medicare, private health insurance, and what to expect.
Important: All surgery costs are individual. A personalised Informed Financial Consent (IFC) with your exact fees, Medicare rebates, and out-of-pocket estimate will be provided before any procedure is booked.
Medicare rebates may apply to the panniculectomy component (abdominal apron removal) when performed for functional clinical reasons following massive weight loss. Other body contouring procedures are generally considered cosmetic and do not attract Medicare rebates. Eligibility is assessed on clinical criteria.
Private hospital insurance may cover hospital costs (ward fees, theatre fees) for procedures that attract a Medicare rebate. The level of cover and fund excess varies significantly between policies. Contact your fund before your consultation.
The gap is the difference between total fees and what Medicare and health insurance pays. For most body contouring procedures, this will be the total cost as they are cosmetic. A full IFC is provided before surgery so there are no surprises.
The following is a general guide only. Actual costs depend on your health fund, clinical complexity, and hospital fees. A personalised IFC will be provided before surgery.
